threaded steerer tube too long

Recently bounced off a Lexus 4x4 and need new forks. Found some beautiful Reynolds but steered tube too Long. Am having the thread extended at not so lbs. My question, there is a 2" slim slot running vertically down the steered tube at the top. Can I chop these forks down across the slot. Safely or.is there another way to accommodate this extra tube. The slot is only used to hold the tabbed spacer in your headset and stop it from turning. The shop that is tapping the forks might be able to extend the slot, but it's not really necessary. Just file off the tab on the inside of the headset spacer and that's it.

I just use a 1" inch a-headset spacer. Works fine on 1" threaded forks.
