Threaded H/set stack height ?

Looking for a 1 inch threaded headset and need some info on stack heights. Got my eye on one with a 27mm height. Is less height the best way to go ?

Less stack height means you will nedd spacer to puch the lock up so it just above the top of the steerer tube or you will need to cut the steerer tube down.

M-part Elite 1" threaded has a stack height of 27mm and use cartridge bearings.

I have them so do SJS cycles and many others.

Best headset for your need/money is the best way to go.

Of course the length of your current steerer may restrict what stack you can use.

Most sources that I've found list the same stack height for all four versions of the mart Elite, making me suspect they've duplicated the data from the threadless version in their listings for the threaded models. Do you have one on hand you could measure?

The mart Elite 1" also seems to be JIS only. Is that right for a P7?

JIS ??. Steerer on the 17in P7 frame is approx 100mm and in the F7 forks it's 130mm (40mm threaded). Was looking at the M part elite in an evil bay shop for £35. Seems well made and light too. Basically I'm after a decent 1in threaded headset, any recommendations ?? Oh, and it's got to be BLACK ! Thanks for all your advice guys. Off to work till 5 tonight. Will check the forum when possible.

I think you're right, I've just looked the headset up and the 27mm to me sound like the threadless version, especially considering it uses cartridge bearings and they usually increase stack height. These headsets can be use either way the top part just switched as far as I can see (mart Adaptor setup) and the spacer and locknut at the top will add height to stack.

30mm doesn't give you enough for a threaded headset, either be more accurate on the measurements or find another fork. (is it original to the frame?)
You're looking at 37/38mm for a cartridge headset threaded.

The Ritchey Logic headsets are very low stack height but at 1" there are a few roadie headsets which would work well too if you are restricted in the steerer tube. My Tequesta had a very short Tange unit on as standard and only the Ritchey could replace it.

If you don't have to get a low stack one then I'd go for any Shimano one as they are beautifully smooth. I have a m734 XT headset bought NOS from the USA pretty cheap and it's amazingly well made. The later XT ones have cartridge bearings and feel and look amazing. I bought one for £35 new and it was worth every penny.

I also just bought an Allsop bike for a friend that had a 105 headset on it in 1" and that's very nice too and would be fine offroad.

I would have thought almost all unless you look for JIS are ISO now.

the mart elite is definitely JIS (30.0mm cup diameter) and won't be a snug fit in your P7 (ask me how I know...) -- you need an ISO standard 'set (diameter 30.2mm from memory)

as far as I can see, most headsets will have a stack height of more than the 30mm it sounds like you need. However, the Tange Passage is available in black (eg from Velosolo or ebay, about £15) - I *think* they are ISO but ask before buying...

(EDIT to second the XT suggestion though, if you can find one)
