Thread pulled from girvin vector 1" steerer.

I was just fitting some 1" girvin vector forks to my orange prestige, when it came to tighting up the aheadset the thread pulled straight out of the top of the steerer :shock:

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to rectify this problem as it seems to be a lump of alloy in the top? held in by pins, that the thread has pulled out of.

Absolutely gutted, thought I would be ready to cycle again tonight :cry:

i think a picture might help...... aheadset star nuts are the only threaded bit i can think of and they are easily replaced...

from memory the vectors steerer has a welded or bonded 'plug' with a threaded hole in the middle rather than starnut. Your only option might be to re-thread the hole with a larger bolt... (you'll have to do the same to your top cap too.)

I did think that would probably be the only option, I have a spare top cap so that will probably have to be the way to go unless anyones got a spare 1" steerer from a dead set gof girvin vectors?

Your only option might be to re-thread the hole with a larger bolt...

Or maybe drill out the plug and run a HeadLock:

The headlock won't work, the bottom of the steerer is bonded on and then roll pinned through the center :-(

I reckon with a vice, some ball bearings, loctite and a spare pair of hands you could secure the insert again

Try the yellow pages for a local machine shop, if they have a helicoil kit they can repair the thread without having to resort to bigger bolts.

How did you go on dude ?

On reading the thread again I am now uncertain if you have stripped the thread or completely pulled the threaded insert out ?
