This is a stupid idea, right?

I've used a steerer that was about 1cm above the headset for about a year on my old jump bike, never had any problems with, but then it was a very short stem. cant say I recomend it, its a case of do as I asn ot as I do...

Only tighten the bottom bolt first, then tighten the top bolt to leave the same amount of gap in the clamp. No more.
Use a steel bolt in the top cap for the headset.
Maybe even a long bolt all the way through the steerer with a large washer and nut underneath the crown. Thats to stop the forks falling out, as for the stem twisting I have no idea!

Don't do anything more than a gentle ride on the road!

fit a heddoctor type thing and it'll be fine

but as is it should be okay

usual disclaimers apply

Need longer steerer...end of :D

anything front end (forks, bars stem) needs to be 100% as thats where a lot of load is concentrated and where a failure could be very painful.

Never fear, I'm still alive. I decided not to try it, so I live to post another day! Apart from a couple of daredevils, most people seemed to confirm my suspicions - luckily an alternative plan has evolved, entailing the forks I originally wanted on there instead of the too-short-steerer pair. Awesome. 8)

I have the same problem, mine is a single bolt stem though, was told that as long as the bolt is clamping on the steerer then it should be ok and the top cap should hold it in place.

Idealy i'd like a longer steerer though, but it's getting hammered down Glentress at the end of the month regardless
