Yeah, but to be fair they weren't exactly old enough to be aware of Ned when he was competing; :

Ned still is competing !

True enough, but he's not plastered all over the magazine covers the way he was BiTD; ergo 'Ned who?'

Ned Overend I'd forgotton about until I started looking at this site, JMC was always a massive influence - watched Getta Grip so many times I nearly wore the video out. Still vividly remember walking down the road from the local town with my mate reading about the news in MBUK. Absolutely tragic, still sends me cold.

I suppose that every generation has it's heros and if the press doesn't talk about them that much then why would the younger riders know? I don't know that much about the current scene and who's in or out - doesn't worry me that much.

Key point here though, johnnyboy, is that they do know who they are now - so good on you. Keep spreading the word. :)

Thing is, the Americans have the opportunity to stay 'in the game' due to the fact everything is so big in the USA compared to here in the UK (which is actually smaller than the smallest State in the USA...) hence why the Brit's, apart from Peaty, just drift off into obscurity. Money rules :?

Incidentally; I think Ned looks better as an old geezer (he's 56...) than he did BiTD! 8)

(I'd agree - doesn't have 80's fashion to content with :D )

...as it is, JMC's popularity was down to his good looks and 'wild boy of mountain biking' image; and whilst I hesitate to say it because some things are sacrosanct, he didn't exactly deliver the results his talent suggested he was capable of...

I had no idea the UK was so small. :P I would have guessed there were counties there bigger than Rhode Island or Delaware (1955 sq. mi).

Rhode Island:
- Area Ranked 50th in the U.S.
- Total 1,214 sq mi (3,140 km2)
- Width 37 miles (60 km)
- Length 48 miles (77 km)

- % water 13.9%
- Latitude 41° 09' N to 42° 01' N
- Longitude 71° 07' W to 71° 53' W
- Population (Ranked 43rd in the U.S. ) Total - 1,051,302 (2011 est)[3]
- Density 1006/sq mi (388/km2)
- Ranked 2nd in the U.S.

To give you some perspective, Greater London is 607 sq. mi. (about half the size of Rhode Island).

Did they make you fell very, very old Jon?

no not really but i was genuinely surprised they did not know about JMC, when we discussed it Ben realised that he'd seen one of JMC's old bikes when he went for his body geometry training (specialized brainwashing) at the specialized HQ.

i can understand more that they don't know about Ned although his name is still mentioned in specialized product, the 'overend' bar ends i think, but JMC still gets mentioned occasionally in the likes of MBUK etc, not to mention he was the first serious UK rider to go to america in search of the big contract, no one else had attempted that at the time.

regards the comment about his results, well my opinion is that he died before he could attain his best results, i have no doubt he would have become a world champion.

:)
