Had it been running long?

I'm wondering whether you need to get that thermostat changed, if it's not straight to 3 o'clock.

Just a tip, though - beware the Torx-40 heads on the thermostat housing - I've had issues with the tstat housing on all 3 Volvos I've had (S70, V70, and 850).

I think he means the external temperature gauge, not the engine temperature.

I know, I got that - I read the subject line...

It was just a tangential point.

Unless after a few minutes driving, it goes straight to the 3 o'clock position, and stays there, I suspect your t-stat has started it's state of decline.

Owned and drove them for over 10 years, and replaced t-stats in all 3 I had, so I know the symptoms... but as I said, the housing bolts are an awful implementation.

The last time I battled with them, I replaced them with the "flange bolts" that are used to hold the throttle body, inlet manifold, and other bits and pieces on.

if i go for a drive it stays vey low.it goes to three if it sits still.i assumed it was due to the car traits and not a fault.are they exspensive to replace.

2 or 3 minutes of driving (actually very little, really) it should go to 3, and stay there.

Being a bit under, or under if just idling, and needs replacing, really - it will probably be affecting fuel consumption.

They're not expensive parts, around £10 for the t-stat. Problem, normally, is undo-ing the t-stat housing bolts - 2 torx-40 head bolts, that tend to not be disturbed for years, then mash up as soon as you look at them - plus tend to be welded in pretty tight.

There is an updated part (believe it or not) for these bolts - think the head (possibly more) is tougher.

t-stats are available as aftermarket parts all over the place - not sure I buy there's much advantage in getting an OEM one, but they're not expensive even if you get a Volvo one. If aftermarket ones go sooner, it's good, because it will encourage you to take apart the housing!

Plus-gas on the bolts a few times, a day or two before, a GOOD torx-40 bit with a long-ish handle - the one I've got is like this only more like 6" in length, and 1/2" driver. And order some 10mm head "flange bolts" from Volvo (they're pennies) to use as replacements when / if you get the original ones out.

You'll lose a bit of coolant, you could drain some off, prior, so it doesn't just spill down the engine and over the alternator - just something to be wary of.

Trying to replace the t-stat, can sometimes result in the housing fracturing where it meets the block (v tricky to get at, you'd really need to remove / move the ps pump and housing, if you have to do this) - if you use any sort of impact to get the t-stat bolts out - dragons be there, so be very careful not to use much striking force to undo them.

None of these parts are expensive - but owners and garages often break the housing mount, if the bolts won't easily shift in the housing, so just something to be wary of, because if it does crack, it's a lot more awkward to replace, because of what's in the way.

i have gorilla hands so il think ill leave it to the garage to do....i can break stuff just by looking at it...fabulous advice tho...thank yo.

i love this site.... 8)

There's something wrong with the speedo and tacho too. They should be pointing in the 4 o'clock direction.

Joking aside, we have 9-ish degrees here. Just your average February weather.
