There is no hope for me!

Only a real worry with knobbly tyres, general purpose tyres just make a zzzzzzzzzzzzz noise, when the brake cable breaks. Knobblys you get a freebie endo.
bzzzzzz, plink, "bugger".

the plink is the saddle cable coming out of the nipple end and flicking into your spokes to get knackered up and never be usable again. The bugger is knowing you haven't got another cable to make a new saddle cable with. :)
 
Those were the days though when a reflector was fitted to the frame with a nut and bolt plus no less than 4 washers.
