The Powder Coating Process...

an orange 223 is 290g liter when fully paint stripped compared to when painted. yeti ASR is available in either anodnised or powdercoat & thats a 1/4lb different in weight for just the front end alone... so yeh you can notice the difference ;)

its kinda funny how so many bike disciplines take the piss outta other disciplines, as someone whos interested in retro, lightweight, xc, freeride & hillclimb i find it amusing how theres so little love between them all considering bikes are bikes
Well I guess bikes with great fat tubes must need a lot more paint on them than skinny old retro steel ones. For skinny steel HT, I was quoted c150g for powder and c100g for liquid - and hey liquid paint chips off so easily, you'll have that 100g down to 80 in no time! Seriously though, when you're as careless and talentless as I am, you have to factor in that it's more fun riding a bike that you don't have to worry about cos it doesn't shed paint every time you sneeze.

thanks for the info :)
i'm not worried about this particular bike sheding paint "its a rental, dont be gentle" springs to mind ;)

Mike,

Just weighed two identical frames-

Liquid paint - two coats primer, three coats color, three coats clear - 4.25#

Powder - just as you see in the blog, sealer, color, clear - 4.55#

Net difference on a 24" TT frame is .26#

cheers,

rody

powder paint

I really like the durability of powder paint-for a MTB it makes a lot of sense. If it weighs .30 pounds more (your math was a little bit off, Rody, 4.55-4.25=.30) that is only 136 grams or so-less than 5 ounces-about one Big Mac. It's impossible to feel such a little difference in weight unless you have an accurate scale on hand-and the bling you get from nice paint is IMMEASURABLE !

thanks for checking rody :D
fairfax pat, I totally agree! I'm also a sucka for a sweet paint job :D ...however in the context of the frame in question, its currently got a boring 1 tone paint scheme & my only slight gripe with the entire bike is the weight -its like 10lbs heavier than my hillclimb bike!

right then, next question. any way to stop an alu frame tarnishing once i've paint stripped & polished it? :)

So paint is a whole bag of doritos lighter than powdercoat?

Seriously no-one is going to notice 1/4lb.

Thats about the weight of a crap in the morning before a ride!
Or a bit of mud!

There are considerations to consider whether you use either finish i.e toughness, durability, longevity, price , appearance etc. Just don't think that weight comes into it really, this ain't the tour de france. :D

No offence meant scant  You could just lacquer the alloy frame?

none taken ;)
I notice the difference, which is why I asked. if you dont care, dont respond ;)

"this ain't the tour de france" yeh i'm not into drugs ;) ... tho every ride is a race. feel free to tag along :D

powder paint

I have a Funk that I polish with medium fine steel wool and soapy water-makes it look like chrome! After polishing I coat it with car wax and it is good to go for a few months and then repeat.

1/4lb is pretty significant on a pretty light bike, but taken a bit further, how many 1/4lbs that you think you can't feel do you need before you can feel it?

Sum of parts....always the way in weenieism :)

Not actually seen a polished 5, wondering how flat the flat bits really are
:?
