Repack Rider
Senior Retro Guru
Thought I would share another of my amazing weekends since Bill Savage found me in the deepest part of the untracked jungle and put me back on the bicycle map.
An old friend formerly of Marin County contacted me about attending a screening of "Klunkerz" in Boise, Idaho. They would pick up my travel and housing. I told them I didn't care to have dinner and leave, so how about a few extra days for riding? Can someone get me a bike?
Done.
A couple of weeks before the event, Gary Fisher calls me. "What's going on in Idaho?"
I told him, and he said, "See you there."
Then Bill Savage says he's coming too.
PartEEEE!!
I got there before the other two, and got in a couple of unbelievable days of riding, miles upon miles of singletrack. The bike was provided by Eric Lafferty, known as Laffeaux online and the owner of a ton of bikes including a Ritchey so old that I build the wheels. His site is oldmountainbikes.com.
When Gary arrived, he needed a bike, so he asked where his local dealer was, and we just walked into the shop unannounced.
Gary asks the startled proprietor, "Do you have a bike with my name on it?"
"Yes, SIR, Mr. Fisher!"
Gary had the mechanic switch the brake levers to his preference, and we were outa there.
A few hours later, on a trail in the hills far from town, we took a break, and another rider showed up, also on a Fisher bike. He was a little startled to be introduced to The Man out on the trail, and Bill spotted him a ticket to the sold out screening later that day.
There's more, but I have to get to work, so I'll post a couple of shots.
First photo is by Paul Fleming, others by Bill Savage.
