Interesting..
The off-topic section appears to provide a soap-box for a small minority who have very little to offer this forum. On the one hand it keeps them out of the other sections (alas not entirely), on the other it leads to a propagation of the worst kinds of internet forum behaviour - as evidenced today.
On the whole the posts in off-topic are light hearted and a welcome diversion, sometimes they are more serious and generate healthy debate. Sadly, of late, a few are generally abusing this forum and making viewing wholly unpleasant.

Speaking purely personally.. the vast majority of my posts are in off topic, and there's a lot of them!!...
BUT.. .. .. that's largely down to inexperience and, despite being middle-aged, am very much a 'newby' (Jeebus I hate that word :roll: ) as far as both the forum and cycling goes.
But I chip in where I can, if I feel I have something useful to offer.
And more generally.. so many members, so many personalities, not everyone is going to get on. In an ideal world they would ignore each other but, inevitably, paths will cross and the blue touch paper will be lit.
Not everyone will 'get' everyone else.. the sense of humour, turn of phrase, whether they use smilies or not, the down days etc. etc. etc.
And, for that last paragraph, I've learned the hard way.. been on the receiving end (almost daily at one point) of the death threats, violence threats, publicly, by pm, email and in person.. not on this forum I hasten to add.
It's too easy for the older (in terms of forum age) members to blame the new people, reminisce about the people who have left (damn those newbies!!) but the fact is it's not necessarily new folk, it's people.. .. .. more people = more risk of friction.
This is a good place to hang out.. proven fact.. the best option, imo, would be to either cyber-shake hands and agree to disagree or just ignore the people that irritate you.
Option 1 makes for more harmony, speaking from experience.

As "they" say, variety is the spice of life. Not everybody gets along; be it face to face, down a telephone line or as an internet warrior hiding behind screens waiting to attack.
There's a few deranged people on here (especially after a drink - me included) and a few turbo posting uber trolls. Either way, if it's kept to the off-topic forum it's OK to me as long as it doesn't get nasty. Some of the profanity nags though; it's surprising just how much there is. My Mrs looks over my shoulder sometimes and thinks I'm looking at my football forum until she sees that the layout is blue and not red
Right, that's my two-penneth; I'd better do some work and dream about my Sunday bike ride with the Mrs and the Nipper.

Its dissapointing to see negativities still been thrown around.
I dont agree with what appears to be current thinking of only 'established members' opinions counting for much.
Unless this forum genuinely only wants the original 10 or 20 members from 'bitd' to be posting then there has to be more of an acceptance of 'new' members.
Ive seen a couple of comments recently along the lines of 'you dont go to RB meets, and youve have never met another member so keep quiet'. If thats the real feeling then there is a problem.
I for one have been to an event where RB members were present, but kept a low profile at the time for my own reasons. I have also met several members offline to trade/go for a ride. Does that make me more valid?
If RB members are more keen on chatting with members they have met, then I think there needs to be more of an emphasis/drive toward inviting new members & even longer established members that have yet to show their faces, to certain meet & greets.
I dont think there is enough effort to encourage 'freshers' to events, and for the more shy amongst us, the prospect of such a meet can seem fairly daunting.
I think a big drive to get everyone to meet up in one way or another could help with the harmony online.
Anyways, I have at least in recent times learnt to take things a whole lot more light heartedly (believe it or not).
