The Jurassic Way

I do feel sorry for you guys down there, Our only restrictions are common sense based - Don't get too near to peoples houses, avoid damage to crops, avoid farm animals during lambing season etc, leave the gates as you find them. If you hear gunfire stay away (it's usually signposted anyway), and the northeast face of Ben nevis is a bit steep too.

I don't see why England has to stick to these draconian laws. You should lobby your MP's, it's not like you have an engine and speed limits could easily be applied.

yep , completely bonker . in france you cant ride everywhere , but most parts are ok .

Aren't footpaths just very narrow bridleways?
Well nobody's going to argue with you big boy, but speaking as a member of a Local Access Forum, I can assure you that landowners are very serious about the precise status of rights of way. If it wasn't for the power of the equestrians, there might not be much access for mountain biking at all in this country.

The problems we have are mainly with trails that are perfectly rideable but that equestrians for some reason aren't interested in. i.e., anything that has been historically used by horses can potentially be classed as a bridle path, but if there's no horse history, there's not much chance, no matter how viable/useful as a link that trail might be.

AfaIk you are allowed to ride bridleways and BOATs. That's Byways Open to All Traffic before anyone makes any comments! :P

You'll have to check about the tow-paths because in some areas you need a licence to ride on them. Unfortunately I don't know where to get one from as there's not many canals in the SE (at least not within reasonable distance of me).

Neill, I sit next to the Northants county council rights of way team (for my sins) - I will enquire. I've inspected majority of bridges along Jurassic way if that makes you feel any safer doing it :)

Good stuff Martin, thanks :D
It seems to end in Rockingham which is about 1.5 miles from my house.....I'm desperately trying to find some local offroad routes and this caught my eye...
