The idea behind it?,..what's yours?

I like companies with history. FATs, Yetis, etc. Their companies carved out niches in the late eighties and early nineties, but their histories are filled with tumultuous times, failed designs, and poor business directions. Throughout the hard times, they stayed true to their roots.

So many companies BITD were the exact opposite: Take successful geometry and throw a bunch of money at a lightweight tubeset and fund a strong race team. That gets your picture in MBA, which brings in the suburban dollars.

One in particular on my mind is GT. Never have I seen such uninteresting bikes, past or current.

I've always had a passion for British bikes. I had a Muddy Fox Explorer followed by a couple of Saracen Killis. I really wanted a Pace BITD but me mate at the bike shop kept breaking his so I got a Zaskar LE instead. I've never regretted that and it's left me with a soft stop for GT bikes too that's never gone away.
Then in '98 I got the Orange E4 and fell in love with hard tails again.....British ones. It's completely irrational I know. There are plenty of bikes just as good, but that's kind of not the point. I'd still like a Pace one day maybe, but the E4 is a real whippet so it's not a huge craving and now I've got the clockwork. :D

I think there's a typlcally English love of the underdog / working class hero thing going on maybe?

Don't you just love this place. :D 8)

oh and the fat ti interest was from when i ran a shop in bedford lawes cycles a guy called ziggy came in with one simply stunning one of the first in the country just so far out of my reach!

Fell in love with the original RTS when it was released in 1992.

Brought my RTS from new in 1996, after finally being able to afford it

As it was still working in 2007, some 11 years later, I thought 'hmmm, there must be something alright about these GT's', and brought a ((cough)) brand new ((cough)) one. The RTS was then put into semi-retirement.

The LTS was a spur of the moment buy, but it was a GT that needed rescuing!

I would now think twice about buying anything other than GT.......as they have never let me down.

This site does rock though. So very, very cool 8)

I too fell in love with the RTS when it was first released, it helped by the fact my first ever mtb was a GT Outpost, with i have built up, 2 x RTS as i wasnt going ot build one, cause it seemed too small, and also it had never ever been built up, but the size seems good, so now have 2, and the Karakoram, as i bid on it for a bit of a laugh, and won it (or most of it for a fiver)

and the mf had a set of carbon scott unishocks on,which i removed, and its at my parents house as a bike to use when i visit them

When my mate was british youth downhill champion, he was part sponcered by fat chance and had the first grello into the uk,which he cracked so it was replaced with a yellow one,,i saved and bought a monster which i had for 15 years-but i always wanted a YO.so when my monster rusted through for the second time a sold it and bought a YO.The man that sponcered my freind, via fat also imported American and IRD so when i finally realised my YO was alittle small and hurting my back i hunted for an american comp lite or MI16 and won
Now i have the dilema of if to keep the YO or let someone else enjoy it

it is great to read these reactions,..and so recognisable
A lot of GT and Pace stories there

my addictions started back in the early 90's with my first MTB a Scott Pro Only.
My god the trips i made with my dad to the numerous dealers and check out the different brands; i drove them all (within my reach) Muddy Fox, Peugeot, Panasonic, Koga Miyata, Cannondale, and so on,..but finally it became the Pro only, it was a nice bike and i drove it daily for fun and skool trips.
I had the luck that i could share the passion with a good friend (who drove a Giant stonebraker ,..you remember right?,..yellow and pink?) and my litte brother (i want to buy him a Rascal for his birthday next month,..he always wanted one)
From that time on i was hooked and started to buy bikes like the Klein Pinnacle which still is in my possesion, a Pearson (i will look up some pictures, never saw a 2nd one, impressive build)
Back then there was a small dealer with a folder with the most amazing bikes money could buy,..it was a small one,..but it was like the playboy for me,..all the brands where there ; American (the beryllium one ,..how much was that one?) Ventana, Ibis, San Andreas (can you imagine what that bike did to me when i saw it for the first time? DROOL!) and the Boulder Defiant (way out of my reach)
From that moment i started to admire the building techniques ,..meterials ,....weldings,.
When i broke the Pearson (after a big air) i went to the dealer (he had a Newsboy and almost bought it from him BITD, why didn't I?) and he introduced me in the world of craftsmanship,..my first Serotta,..i still remember driving the Serotta for the first time on a Thursday evening,..after 100m my heart was stolen,..
From that time i was addicted to the great steal frame builders like Fat en Dekerf,...i can look at the details for hours 8) like the fork of a DeKerf,..isn't that beautiful?
My current collection isn't that focused but more or less all round; Steal , Alu, Ti, normal , E-stay, Mountain , XC,...
In time i would like to focus more on the steal frames,..I would like to own a Fat, DeKerf, Ibis Mojo, Breezer, Ritchey P20, Serotta (i already do) and i want to keep the Defiant.
The problem is that i have a hard time saying good-bye to the other bikes so i decided not to sell them but just store them and not mention them again,...
Accept for the EASTON,..that one is going to be the bike i want to ride XC,..it is sooooo good,...
