The end of religion??

survovak of the fittest etc./adaptation
where religon just doesnt fit in anymore (and the lesser spoken languages are probably more of a barrier than anything)
its a shame as it could also mean a cutural diversity decline
but then new cultures could be seen

same has been happening for centuries 8)

religion will never die, to think that you must assume all people will grow to understand their part in the universe, and to some that is scary place, so they will always fall back to a comfortable place, and also science will never answer all the questions, so up steps religion again to fill the gaps for the ignorant.

So we are to assume all people who have faith are ignorant, and that growing to understand the universe encourages non belief?

Tremendous.

I guess my grandfather, who was a world class scientist and spoke half a dozen languages was an ignoramus.

I learn something new every decade.

'fraid so. No disrespect to your Grandfather but I'm not sure how speaking six languages would have made his religious views any more valid? Maybe you mean that because he was both intelligent and religious he must have been right?

The trouble is...

Many studies have been done that show a strong link between high intelligence and Atheism. In a nutshell, the more intelligent you are, the less likely you are to be religious.

Your Grandfather may have been both intelligent and religious, but by using him as an example you're citing a singularity in order to try to prove an arguement and as a world class scientist, I'm sure he'd never have agreed with that kind of behaviour ;)

I am not sure he would understand what you meant by arguement.

Mentioning the number of languages he spoke, etc. has nothing to do with any arguement (sic) about religion, it is a shorthand for asserting he was not 'ignorant'.

I don't need to worry about using a single example, I am not writing a thesis, I am not presenting my argument in anything other than an anecdotal manner.

Obviously my opinion is based on my own personal experience in this area, not merely based on having a grandfather who had faith as well as great intelligence.

You put forth a totally unproven and frankly ridiculous notion that people of 'greater intelligence' tend to have less faith.

Crap.

religion is a belief.not a factural thing. i believe most religious people use their faith to aid them in their lives.each to their own and if it helps them live through life good for them. i however do not believe that non factural beliefs should be forced upon children and adults and that countries shouldnt be run through religion. it just does not work, look back in history,to even BC and religion has killed more than other reasons.

i have very strong spiritual theories and religion and a creater aint there. this can become a very nasty topic, hence wars, so please lets keep this topic well within reason. :D

The main reason formal religion has caused so much trouble is the didactic nature of it; the constant struggle to assert one form of belief as the truth, superior to another, highlighting differences rather than similarities.

Putting forward arguments that non belief is an indicator of some form of superiority is falling into the same trap.

Richard Dawkins has turned anti-theist argument into a money spinning belief system in a couple of decades.

He has given succour to the vast swathe of spouters who are too lazy to look further into their nihilism before asserting their own personal 'truth'.
