The dreaded R*** word

For some reason, I’ve never had problems with rust. All my bikes are steel and pick up chips from time to time, but the baremetal has stayed grey and I’ve never bothered with it. But I’m now buying a frame with several little chips that are brown. I’m assuming the rust is superficial but needs to be dealt with, and I was going to buy a gel rust-remover plus a car touch-up kit in the nearest colour I can find, but I just thought I’d ask whether this is the right thing to do:

a. is the gel better than the stuff that converts rust to metal (or filing it off by hand)?

b. is there anything more suitable than car touch-up paint?

Grateful for any advice from people who’ve done it.

Having owned three Triumph cars I know all about rust! My advice? Do both! Take the rust off and use the rust converter. I would take a little more paint back just in case there is a little lurking under the paint. You need to check that the paint you use does not react with the converter. Also consider waxoil inside the tubes.

I've used a product called KU-rust from Halfords, you clean any loose surface rust off then paint it on, it looks milky white, it then goes bluey black and the literature says thats it , the rust is stopped dead in its tracks! you can prime and then paint over it.
Hope this helps.

I've used it too! It is good stuff. I have noticed that it turns black regardless of whether the metal is rusty or not!

Hello

when you find a little rust inside of the bottom bracket and the headset of the frame, what is the best way to treat them before putting the bottom bracket and headset back on the frame, will waxoil be ok? any tips for this one please.

thanks
