It’s our cyclone season, but this time we have the biggest cyclone in the history of the state heading right for where I live! This thing is massive, gale force winds 500 km from the eye.

It is very eerie outside, bit of a breeze, cloud cover and very hot and humid. Some people at work who have never been in a cyclone think this is exciting – but I’m shit scared. I’m not sure my little wooden house will not hold up.

I think I will seriously just lay in the bathtub with my 5yo and put a mattress over our head.

This shows where it is predicted to go: http://www.bom.gov.au/products/IDQ65002.shtml

Live radar – should be colorful in the next few hour/ days

wow sorry to hear that!
i didnt know you get cyclones in oz
can you tell me the general distance what the strong winds are normally?

theres no slowing up of this one
i will agree its quite 'exciting' (interesting?), the people that find it exciting are probably adrenaline junkies, or have experienced it before?

in a strange way
primitive?

just a thought, is your bathtub downstairs?
the way i see it the top of your house will get attacked first?
although this may then fall into the lower half. if your really not sure when it hits maybe got to a stadium or something like that

Cyclone Larry was a big one that hit (mid range category 4) about 100 km south of here (Cairns) 5 years ago. It is now the benchmark of strength and damage for the state (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone_Larry ). We got some very strong gale force winds here, this one is twice the size and may hit as a high Cat 4 or even a Cat 5. Norrmally 200 km away and you pretty safe.

I live in what’s known as a low set Queenslander, so it’s not a 2 storey house. The bathroom is the only room with a concrete floor, my biggest worry is loosing the roof. There are also reports there will be a 4 metre storm surge, we are far enough from the coast (about 3 km) to avoid the worse of it, but it will flood. I have my 3 best bikes in my bedroom, buy think I will loose the back shed with everything in it. I have my Trek commuter and Amp B2 frame in there. I’ll chain the Boulder, Litespeed and Xizang together and hope the don’t take off.. I’ve done just about everything I can at the moment, so it will be a sleepless night, most likely sit on the net and wait and see what tomorrow brings. If I had a car I would be out of here.

Oh, shit. Here it comes! Best of luck Mate.

BTW, don't you mean 'Psyclone'? No, wait...

(*Hope the attempt @ humor isn't misplaced right now*)

The wind is just starting to pick up, they reckon we will have gale force winds by the morning of about 125 km/h– and it is not predicted to hit with full force until 1 am! Also news reports are talking of a 6 metre storm surge and up to 300 km/h winds, I just can’t comprehend that sort of wind speed.

whenever i saw the floods on tv, there were always someone sipping a cold one, or a group of peeps carry a large chest like fridge thing above their heads in the floods, you guys are so laid back.
