Hi,

Please, click => click link

Why are they for front use only, like they claim?

I wun two pairs of brakes from them: 1 pair 'XC Pro' brake (XC9000 actually  , see note) and 1 pair Self Energizing for the rear (other auction)

SJS did send me 2 pair of the same 'XC Pro' brake instead.

Not a big deal to me, but they're claiming they only can be used for the front.

Really?

Note: The 'XC Pros' aren't XC Pros. They are XC9000s. Still nice though. Nicely finished product, but they are quite heavy. Good I do not care much about weight. The XC9000 group was a kind off XC Pro predecessor. They are MY89 probably.

they were BITD claimed to be too powerful!
I remeber my friend johns white splatter kona had a set & they seemed fine on the back... although to be honest I never felt any increase in power with them.

I'd stick with the "xc pros"

I believe some of the brakes (SE ones) were designed for front or rear use only. The Self Energizing feature used the rotation of the rim to increase the power and since one wheel rotates "into" the brake and the other rotates "away" from the brake, the brakes are end specific.

The helix was end specific, ie the rear brake 'energised' into the canti stud on the frame, whereas the front 'energised away from the canti stud as per the rotation of the rim.

I remember one of the other problems was that if you used the SEs on front and you had a ding in your rim then if the wheel dragged on the pad it could cause the brake to activate without you pulling the lever and then causing you to endo.

I do know the rear SE brakes are for rear use only and I also understand why ....but I didn't get the SE. I got 2 pair of the XC9000 brakes instead ...and I am wondering why they claim it is for front use only. Will the braking be terrible when I mount the 2nd pair at the back? I do not see why. As scant suggest, I indeed shouldn't bother.

Maybe I do trail and error. Or settle for that I can equip 2 bikes with XC9000 front brake

If it isn't an SE brake, about the only difference between front and rear would sometimes be the length of the brake arms themselves.

those are not front or rear specific. arm length might indeed limit usablilty on the rear but you will find out. i wouldn't complain about getting two xc9000 instead of the SE... but if you want to trade i'm your man ;)

Hi all,

Thanks for all your input.

I considered the option of buying 2 pair SE to complement the XC9000s, but there seem to be no reason to accept the XC9000s are front only.

You are right, Carsten. I should be happy with 2 pair XC9000 brakes. I can confirm I am :) They are nicely made pieces. They will do really well on any non weight weenie build.
