Making myself out to be a dumbass here, but hey, we all have to start somewhere!

I have never changed cranks before

So, I have brought myself some new cranks for the Avalanche and I want to put them on today. I have a crank removal tool, I think its easy, but if someone would be kind enough to do a step-by-step guide for me to follow, that'd be great.

Thanks

Square taper type or newfangled 'octaplasm' or whatever they call it? I've never dealt with the newer stuff but old ones are a doddle. If Sheldon can't help, come back here.

octalink is very similiar to square taper. just a spline instead of the square taper. thru axle the drive side arm & b.bracket axle are 1 piece. the non drive side arm bolts to the spindle (again via a spline)
after feeling the stiffness improvement of thru axle hollowtech11 style I wont be going back :)
the tools have changed, but they're all pretty easy to work on.

It always helps to be a little more detailed in your current component and replacement component information.

For instance if you have a square taper crank and you are fitting a new square taper crank, will the BB axle be of the correct size?

It it of european or US origin, as some italian designed chainsets and BB's had different tapers on the BB.

Are you replacing non compact with compact?

If removing a splined BB some old tools may not work, some crank pullers require a top hat cap to fit over the end of the oversize axle, otherwise some older crank pullers just fit straight into the hollow axle. Some oversize axles offer no clearance for older shimano BB cup tools.

Are you replacing a non Shimano BB with Shimano?

It's an easy job to do if you have the right tools and compatable components though.

I never pretend to remember how to do a job, I really don't do some of them often enough and I would only get the thread wrong!. I just get my book out every time. It is working slowly, I can get V-brakes set up now without resorting to the book. Still don't touch headsets though!
