Just putting the idea out there, I was wondering if anyone had a Fixed gear bike they would want to swap for my peugeot Mirage? Pics below, ill add more detail if anyone is interested, its a 59 or 60cm frame but ill check in the morning. I wanted to convert this to a fixie but cannot for the life of me find a rear fixed gear wheel.

Warning - Puppy killing proposal

You know - that would make an excellent fixed wheel. If the sizing is right also....

You don't need to find a fixed wheel hub to convert. Plus, most track hubs are 120mm so you would have to respace anyway.

Let's assume that it is a screw on freewheel on the rear wheel, then all you need are tools, the tools that you really need for maintaining a bike anyway.
Cone spanner, spoke key and really useful, Verniers, to get the chainline measurement.

If you are game, there are pleny of peeps on here who will help, and who have done this very conversion before. Plus Sheldon brown has an excellent guide, and I know of one more guide which is video based and is very well done showing a motobecane being converted.

:)

I would love to convert this as it is a fantastic bike and i've never seen another pug mirage, I took the freewheel off but its attached to the hub, the rear 'cassette' comes off but the freewheel part is somehow connected to the hub.

Fair doos.

So short of getting all Surly Fixxer , (which works with some, not all shimano hubs), on it, you need a cheap screw on freewheel wheel, which you should be able to get for a very cheap price, and the added bonus is that you get to keep you other stuff in case you want to put it back.

Even if you got a 126 spaced fixed hub, you would still have to get the chainline of you front chainring matched. The conversion way you can adjust the wheel accordingly...

All you will need to buy is a 3/32 track cog, which hubjub sell an EAI version. Or you could run 1/8 cog, with a 1/8 chain with the 3/32 chainring BUT the chainline will need to be bang on. (I run this setup because I use a stainless 3/32 Surly ring. Works well but then the bike is setup bang on)

I have all the tools to do most jobs on my bike, and work in a pretty good workshop so any suggestions as to how best convert it would be appreciated. I do have another rear wheel off my raleigh bannana bike but im really struggling to remove the freewheel, it looks like there are parts missing from it but I may be able to do something with that.

I took my raleigh wheel to my local bike shop and he removed the freewheel for me and just so happened to have a trag cog in too!no locking though but I have got round the problem with a BB locking ring which fit!Well nearly just had to take a few mm off the diameter of it. Ill get some pics up tommorow, just need to sort the spacing out to get the chainline perfect but so far so good!

Good man!

Actually a track lock ring won't work because the thread is in the opposite direction.

Before you apply the BB ring as a lock ring, make sure you ride the bike when done and climb some hills to get that track cog on good and tight, use a little bit of grease on the threads or preferably loctite. That way you will get a tighter fit. Then you can use the lockring.

Read the section in SB on converted hubs. They sometimes get called a suicide hub, which is a bit dramatic. If done tight and you don't have a tendency to attempt skidding all the time in a low ratio, will be spot on.

Take it your Mirage has horizontal dropouts? So you can move the wheel to adjust chain tension? Or are they vertical?
