Hi,
Last year I bought a 94(ish) Marin Muirwoods so I could ride in the Brighton Big Dog Enduro race. Since buying the bike I’ve got into riding it and am planning to ride it again in the Big Dog this year.

Last year my wrists were destroyed from riding rigid for 3 hours and I want to buy some suspension for the bike. I’ve looked at the manufactures info on this site and can see I’d need a 1 1/8 sized fork but beyond that I’m clueless. I imagine a Manitou 2 would fit, as they were fitted to the Pine Mountain model in the same year, but they are quite difficult to find, so I’m open to offers of any compatible suspension fork.

Or alternatively, I’d appreciate info on what to look for while searching ebay, as there are lots of 1 1/8 forks on there, I just don’t know if I’ll face any compatibility issues by buying certain forks. Ideally I’d like some forks from the same period.

I’ve been bidding on different retro bikes on Ebay for a little while, trying to get something a little better than the Muirwoods, but the prices keep getting outside of my budget, so for now I’m looking to upgrade the bike I got.

Cheers

firstly, whip your existing forks out and, measure your steerer from base of crown race to the top of the threaded bit, also make note of how much of it is threaded.

I know that can be a 5 min job for some and a nightmare for others(sorry, i'm assuming you are versed with regular bike tools?) if too inconvenient measure from base of headset to top of locknut and minus 2mm. you can be a tad too long as you can add spacers, too short and it gets tricky.

anyhow, go from there, you know what you are looking for then, your measurement by 1.1/8" and threaded and, the lesser the travel the better.

rock shox indy, judy, some marzocchi's even RST 281/381 are good reliable forks if already in good nick.

you are running canti brakes so a canti hanger on the new forks isn't essential failing that a stem mounted hanger are cheap and plentiful should you have to faff and alter things.

Just to add, your bike is a 1996 model, i reckon.

what size marin is it ?

I picked up a 1991 eldridge that someone had added suspension forks (RST Mozo Pro) to that I have taken off and are surplus to requirements, I need to swap the headset over as well, but bits are surplus at the moment, if interested can post better pics, where are you ?

Looks like a 17.5 C-T-C to me, And as such i have a pair of Manitou 3's that'll look nice on that. PM me and i'll dig some pics out of the album.
