Suntour XC Pro Thumbies

xc Pro thumbies

I still reckon these are the best shifters ever. Light reliable, and shift almost any rear der. I even used to turn them upside down and put them on the opposite side of the handle bar (rear on left etc) and use them as underbar shifters. Push with your thumb and pull back with index finger. Sounds wierd I know but try it for fun one day. I raced with them like that for years. I have never heard of a non crash related failure either.

I used XCPro with XT-R BITD But all gear changes were great except for the 6th gear. I always hads to over click a little to get it in. Which took a little getting used to.

Another use for them is as a lockout lever on rear suspension units. I used a lefthand one for this on my old Trek Y-SL. 8)

There does seem to be one gear in which they slip occasionaly as if the gears just arn't quite lined up right - I don't remember this from BITD and had thought it was just my cables or slightly worn rear mech.

My local shop warned me that they may not work perfect. And they were right. 99% perfect. from new. :)

I got a set of these in '92 off a mate when my XT RF+ combos exploded one day on a ride. Initially I was running them with a DX rear mech which I remember not being absolutely perfect. Destroyed the rear mech a couple of weeks later (had to split and re-join the chain for a single speed 25 mile ride home...) and replaced it with an XT short cage.

Shifting in that combo was absolutely brilliant. Don't think I ever bettered it actually until pairing up a set of Pauls Thumbies (Dura Ace end shifters) with a Dura Ace rear mech. That just seems perfection...

Love the XC Pros though, definitely one of the finest shifters ever, and lovely light.

My RH XC pro thumbie got a bit sloppy* after many years of use. Anyone know if these can be serviced?

*Technical term: There is a bit of up and down play in the shifter and the clicks aren't as clicky as they used to be.
