Suntour XC pro-comp compatibility

Ok boys, then just won this good old italian aluminum bike, nothing special but in really good conditions :

Unfortuntely it misses wheels.
Now I have a mix between XC pro and Comp on it and I need a cassette to use. Thumb seems to have 7s (and 6 click) on it. Do it has famous ghost click?
I have just shimano freewheels, can I use a 8 or 9 speed cassette downgraded to 7 or 8s?
That's first Suntour group i own and never seen one before

Odd mix and match, the rear mech is not microdrive.

Technically you cannot use the shifters with a 7 speed shimano, though it will work.
Best to get an 8 speed cassette and remove a cog or try and shift all 8 by pushing it beyond it's 7th position. The 8 speed spacings are closer to the Suntour spacing of the 7 speed.
(from memory anyway, could check but easier just to try )

There are some reasonably cheap suntour 7sp hubs/cassette combos NOS on eBay at the moment - I'd buy one of those and replace the rear hub on your shimano wheels...........
