excuse my ignorance, but are these Suntour 7spd the same as the shimano thumbies in that you can use them with an 8spd mech & cassette??

Yes made by Suntour.

Yep - no problems using these with Shimano mechs and cassettes. Not so sure about 8 speed to be honest. These are being sold as 7 speed.
