Suntour/Shimano

Am I right in saying theres a difference between a Suntour compatible chain and a Shimano chain.
Using a XTR front and XT rear mech with Shimano 7 spd but a chain from a 90's Suntour XC.Keep getting a clicking noise which I think is because the chain needs to be slightly wider for the jockey wheels?
Any thoughts?

Suntour's groupsets were a bit notorious for being incompatible between each other and this extended to there being specfic chains for different transmissions.

What speed is your XT rear mech for? If it's an 8 or 9 the chain may well not fit through the cage properly. The front mech doesn't matter.

I'd say do yourself a favour and get a good chain - either a modern top end Shimano or a Sachs / Sedis / Roholoff. Suntour were never lauded for the quality of their chains.
