Sunrace 5 speed spacer

My old Atom 5 speed freewheel has a separate spacer and my new sunrace 5 speed doesn't.

How do I know whether I need to use the spacer?

I don't think you need the spacer. It's either there to space the top gear away from the hub/spokes or as an aid to help stop the freewheel thread binding to the hub i.e. to make it easier to remove. Stick it on without it and see how you get on - either way you'll probably have to adjust the derailleur a little because it looks like the back-spacing might be slightly different between the two.

Thanks for your reply.

I think you are right that the spacer was there to keep the back of the freewheel off the hub.

I measured the two freewheels and the sunrace was only about 1mm narrower than the Atom with the spacer, so put it on without and it changed fine, I fine tuned the gears anyway as you have to do something if you gone to the trouble of getting the work stand out :D
