'Suicide shifter' question

I have a Paris Galibier with no provision for a front derailleur so thought about looking out for a Simplex or Cyclo (or similar) 'suicide' rod operated shifter. I'm concerned about the fit on a 33.5mm diameter lower seat tube on the Galibier, although I've seen some photographs of the bike with one fitted. Does anyone know anything about the size of the various band-on fittings for these shifters, and perhaps which model I should look out for?

Thanks, Bob

Hand controlled front changers were made for 1 1/8 inch tubing and expected to be attached on a standard seat tube rather than perhaps an inch in front or behind. They were made for the 99.999999% of contemporary bikes, the manufacturers had no reason to make a few odd fittings.

Such frames as Sun Manx TT, Thanet Silverlight, Baines and yours were originally produced before the front changer was seen as essential.

"Suicide" is a totally misleading title, I actually used a Campagnolo Paris Roubaix in a genuine road race with a handlebar control front changer on the left, as the Simplex hand control was ok changing to the larger ring with the inside of my leg having undone the back wheel, but the other way I had to undo the back wheel then use the same hand to select the inner ring, then do up the rear wheel.

I think you will have to devise your own clamp.

Re:

Thanks Keith for another very knowledgable reply. I'll perhaps have to keep this one with a single chainring and get some more training in!

I use a Benelux shifter like this on my late 50s Carlton, they are simple and work well, but take a bit of getting used to!
