I live on the retro fat tire forum ... post two on here. Total road newbie!

I am rebuilding a kool 1981 (guessing by serial#) bike.

I want to get a high end period correct group, but I want something that is also going to perform well. Suggestions? Campy Super Record, Nuovo Record, and Shimano DuraAce EX I suppose are my options?

Re:

Welcome to the dark side!

Shimano 600EX is probably the easiest option, very stylish with the arabesque markings, readily available for smallish money. There was also 600 AX an attempt to produce an aero group - very classy and a lot more rare these days and Dura-Ace too. Then there's Campag as you say, the pricey option now. Besides that Suntour Superbe is good and works and can still be found...

Haha ... thanks!

Good stuff. If I go the Campy or Dura Ace route, is there a better option for a rider? I have been looking at the groups and I don't mind spending some $$. I am not expecting the same performance as my modern Ultegra bike, but I'd like something that's reliable and pretty :)

Re:

Super Record/Record mix is probably the right option then. Don't splash out on the titanium parts unless you have a money tree because they were brittle and unreliable, and look out for chainsets that have micro cracks devloping from metal fatigue being passed off as nos etc - that's a painful mistake  .

What frame is it? Any pics? Some frames suit Campag more than others :)

Shaun

It's a 1981 WJ Lindsay frame. Sort of a hens tooth. Like I said, I'm a mtb guy so you can imagine there'd be a link and recognize the name :)

It should be here next week :)
