is it all 8 speed? I know STX and the Special Edition crap is 7, but wasn't RC 8spd only.

Building a new rear wheel for the trials bike and I want a 7 speed parallax hub that I can beat the snot out of and never feel bad about it. I hate Parallax. :P

Why? Don't know much about them apart from I have had XT Parallax hubs on my Kona for 14 years and they have been fine.

From a durability perspective they are fine, no problems, but they are ugly. Too bad that Shimano made the prettiest hub in all their years with the M900 and then went to the blocky Parallax trash right after.

I got my revenge on the Big 'S' by peeling the flanges off of their Parallax hubs with my trials bike whenever I could. Now I'm putting together another trials bike and they are my #1 choice for a decent older hub that I wouldn't ever feel bad about breaking. :P

But you will NEVER break it! I have a 1992 LX rear that has run up about 25,000 miles and still has beautiful bearing surfaces.

2 LXs and an STX and counting. Never say never! :D

As best i can tell, STX-RC went 8sp in 1997 when the part number for the cassette had a '-8' added to the end.

EDIT: So you want any hub FH-MC33 for a 7sp rear wheel.

That's good info, thanks, Tallpaul. 8)

I should point out that while I've brokn flanges on three Shimano Parallax hubs, that it was done on a trials bike. I wouldn't call that a weak hub, but rather just abuse from me. I don't blame Shimano for the failures, only for the ugly styling. Like I said in the early posts, I've not had problems with the parallax hubs under normal conditions. I've also not broken the XT or XTR variants either, and I think they are both forged, so that may account for something. All three failures were to the drive side flange and were not to the internal bearing surfaces. I've had axles shear and hub bodies strip too, but again, that is to be expected on a trials bike I think.

Just want to be clear about how they broke, I don't want to be the propogator of bad info.

My search for FH-MC33 starts... :D
