Stuck seatpost, mangled inside the frame - what now?

Yes, indeed,
maybe with some old cotton fabric, secured with duck tape...

I am just not quite sure about what is ok and what isn't...

I am planning to use this product to unblock pipes at home. It shouldn't do any harm to plastic, since it is stored into plastic containers...
Should I add (a bit of) water to provoke a reaction? How long should I leave it in there?

Do aluminium frames suffer stuck seatposts ?

Coz if they do, that rules out caustic soda, hydrochloric acid or any other chemical that eats aluminium.

Cut the post from the opposite side :?
You then have two halves, instead of a near complete tube ,which is probably as strong as it was before[if you get my drift :?]

Do you actually mean cutting into the seat tube lenghtwise?

No,dont be mental
The seatpost is cut using a length of hacksaw blade
You poke it down inside and start sawing the full length of the stuck post, stopping when you reach the seat tube.
I always find it hard to describe these things so im not going to bother

caustic soda works well in steel frames

dishwaser tabs are a slightly less agressive alternative

I'd be concerned about that heating on the seat tube, it's obviously not got too hot as the paint hasn't quite bubbled but it could have affected the temper of the steel.
Maybe I'm being overly paranoid but I've done some heat treating of steel before and it's quite finicky (read that as failed knife making project  ).

Re: Up concerning the caustic soda technic!

Hi to all!

I would really like to try to caustic soda technic, to see if this can help....
But I am wondering how to proceed...?

because there is still a bottom bracket in the frame. This one is a least doing its job very fine. But I couldn't manage to open it either without starting to damage the lockring... So I would really like to leave it on the frame.

What do you suggest me to do?
I could hang the frame upside down and insert the caustic soda through the holes of the bottle cage, but then what?

cut couple of plastic bags over the open end, taped to the seat tube to seal the open end.... or some inner tube, other end folded up on itself and sealed with tape.

frame upside down and supported; pour in soda solution via the top bottle cage hole, once it comes out of the lower bottle cage hole, you know you have enough.

no idea for how long to leave it but you may need to do this several times - I would leave it for 24 hours before a look see..

by using hot water you can make the solution stronger plus the reaction will be slightly quicker although the frame will soak up some of the heat.

pls post photos of before and after.

My brother has asked me to get the post out of his 1989 Muddy Fox Seeker. I'm going to try the caustic method. I'll post some pics and conclusions when I've done it, if that'll help anyone.

Cheers.

I'm watching this thread intently. Still struggling to remove a stuck stem (I guess the principle is the same). I'm next gonna try soaking for a few days in Coca Cola, then I'll try the dishwasher tabs if that doesnt work, then I'll be at my wits end and will have to try the caustic stuff. Looking forward to pics of chemical experimentation.
