Stripping & rebuilding a Marin IFT (1995)

Well, having ordered a set of decals from Mr Gil_m I am committed to refurbing this beasty asap.... Its not a re-paint job, just a strip down, frame strip down, polish? relacquer and re-sticker up.

Any tips for along the way accepted. Things I am thinking of off the top of my head

1) hairdryer to warm old stickers to come off easier (if they don't peel nicely)

2) nitromors paint stripper to remove old lacquer?

3) I have autoglym & autosol metal polishes for my car. Suitable to use on the bike frame as well once bare?

4) best lacquer for sealing in the new finish? I have plenty of automotive stuff

I am just hoping nothing else breaks along the way as I don't fancy having to replace too much on it. Everything on it is oem/full XT/original, aside from I think the wheels... Even on original marin lite pads I think.

Love those marin lite cantis and decals.

I've not done a frame but have used regular laquer on alloy wheels and they look good 4 years on.

It might be worth getting decals you can laquer over if possible to help protect them in the future.

Nitromors should be good for taking the laquer off and most polishes will bring the frame up, even t cut, though a ball burnished factory finish will be difficult.

Good luck and keep posting the pics.

nice bike!

i'm out of my league with finishes but everything up to putting a shine back on sounds ok with me. i reckon most car polishes ought to be good for it.

the pads are original. logics were the dealer issue. as they are of a deep structure they tend to drop of the rim at the bottom leaving a 'lip' on the pad. best to just replace them in that case.

the saddle is a replacement. the ift had the skinnier marin lite one.

you have a good start there, let's see the finished product 8)

I like these a lot. Although I would say that. I have 2.

I'll be doing the same as you soon with 1 of them, and had decided upon the same procedure. I'll follow yours closely. Will you be starting a thread in the readers section?

If you want to sell the bottle cages let me know.
I have 1 Silver Marin to trade also.

Good luck with the rebuild. I've stripped an earlier one using Nitromors. It will probably need doing a couple of times with the nitromors. Then I used Autosol to get a shine on it. I had heard mixed stories regarding lacquering so left mine bare metal.
I have just given it a quick polish with Autosol today after nearly a year and its come up sparkling again although it didn't really look like it needed doing.
Enjoy :D

Indian Fire trail Restoral. Decals under or on laquer?

Hi, I too am half way through the same project as yourself though i just bought the frame, (should have been finished ages ago). There were no decals on my frame though when i got it, I got a set off Mr Gil_m which are great but the metal head tube and seat tube are irreplaceable so your lucky you have those, the vinyl ones i got from Gil are good but dont have the same effect as the metal ones.
Iam a bit stuck on what to do with my decals though, there are mixed reports about laquering and wether to fit the decals before or after, so if anyone has any advice I would be gratefull.
When i took the laquer off I roughed it up with a scourer pad first then used cotton wool pads with an acetone based nail polish remover (the missus is a beauty thetapist so i had it hand). This took most of the laquer off then I used autosol with a scourer pad to take the last of it off. Then polished with autosol and it came up quite well. its hard to get inbetween the cnc'ed bits on the yoke but all worth it.
The frame looks a little dull in the picture as its been untouched in the garage for 6 months but does polish up well.
As you can see fron the picture Ive got some wheels and some manitou 3's. Ive got XT M737 & M739 bits to go on but not sure on what brakes to put on it, I dont have a crankset either and i believe there are 2 types of the white industries ones that were used on the marins one being better than the other but i would like a middleburn one with blue rings but thats funds permitting.
