Stove enamelling vs powder-coating

fair enough, i heard that a normal paint lacquer will not melt them but i guess stickers getting chipped is the least of my worries - just replace them.
You will have to bear with me - i am new to this forum - but addicted already!, so how do i get hold of Gil? I need some stickers !!

to be fair, there probably is a laquer you can use that wont melt them (most bikes have decals laqured over right?) but unless its a high end frame you have and you want a flawless factory style finish, I would say dont laquer, its great being able to alter the decals of just refresh them.

If you search for Gil_M , then send him a PM, be polite, and offer him beer! He's a top chap.

There was a Pink re-sprayed Kona some time ago on this forum. Resprayed by Argos (stove enamel) with Gil_M's reproduction decals. It was clear-coated over the decals and looked absolutely brilliant. Colour not my cup of tea but my point is that Gil's decals can apparently be lacquered in without any issues.

I was talking to my local powder-coaters a few days ago with this very question. He reckons that the best option is to powder-coat first, then apply decals and then do a wet spray on laquer such as 'clearcote' over the top.
You could in theory get a clear powder-coat applied over the decals, but the chances are they would melt and distort while the frame goes back into the curing oven at 180-200degC.

Just checked the Windridge website - cracking site that explains the process very well, and they say exactly what you have pointed out - however they also say that due to decals melting they no longer apply them, might have to call them tomorrow and try and persuade them otherwise!

Speak to the top man - Dale, and mention this site :-)

I am very impressed with their work on the Marin and will be sending the ProFlex soon 8)

I'm going for powder coat on my Duster fairly soon as over the years riding BMXs I've seen just how tough it is (so long as it's not too thick!)

More pics in sig link below,

I must say its an amazing job but all in including fitting Gil_m's decals under laquer (that Argos even charge to fit ) was appx £185 frame, forks and stem. Not cheap but I had no experience with decent powercoaters at the time.

I have now found a local powdercoaters that can do metalic colours, I saw some of their items and was really amazed, watch this space as I am taking a frame there soon for a metalic powercoat
