Quick question can you extend a steerer by welding or would it be unsafe?

Re:

It can be done but safety can never be guaranteed.
It is better to get a steer extender instead.
Comes in various sizes and most importantly reversible.

Re:

It can be done very safely. In fact Dave Yates told me that the steerer on my forks was stronger after the weld than before as he sleeves, pins and brazes the steerer.

Yates, Argos, Mercian, Jackson and every other reputable frame builder offers the service - they are not likely to risk reputation by doing something suspect now are they. It's not a new service but something that has been done for years.

As for steerer extenders: a quick way to add half a pound to your bike, limit your bike to aheadsets only and make it look like a bodge job.

Just looked, looks like argos can do it for £60 so that's an option...

Just be sure that if you're going to use a quill stem to have them cut low down on the steerer so as to avoid the sleeve fouling the quill.

Argos are a quality outfit, no hesitation in recommending them!

I have the BBB extender on one of my bikes. Really simple to fit, the spacers mean it can extent anything between a few mm, and several inches. As for lookng like a "bodge job", well it's totally invisible when built up, as it's inside the fork, headset and stem.

Of course, an extender only works for ahead steerers. If you need a threaded fork extending, then this means the Argos route would be needed.
