Steel Syncros stem

I made a separate thread about an old Cannondale I found here.

One of the parts it came with is this 1" Syncros stem, which is surprisingly made out of steel and not aluminum. It also uses an expander and not an wedge like "regular" Syncros stems.

I would appreciate some insight, did Syncros made steel stems at some point or could it be a fake?

I wanna say it is legit old school Syncros.

It sure looks like one.

They did make steel ones, but not many of them. Interested in selling/trading?

I think I've got a box of wedges for these stems, well the expander plug things. They came to me with a steel syncros stem but it had a wedge, never noticed if it had a slot cut in it, it was a while ago and long gone now.

This is a genuine. First series from 1991 if I'm not mistaken. Afterwards they are openwork at the level of the front sticker.

Yes, indeed it looks like the typical Cattleprod 1st gen design.
Without a hole in the front and with flat end of the shaft, where from ~92 on this was cut more diagonally.

Still, to me also the first series was already made out of Aluminum, I've never heard or have seen a steel one


Ad from 1989 without mentioning the material at all, but a for that time very low weight


The Ad with the fames Syncros labled bike should be roughly from 91, they do mention Aluminum (and surprisingly a higher weight)


So, I'm wondering do we still have to distinguish between a first series steel Cattleprod, maybe from 89-90 and a aluminium-made Cattleprod 1st gen 91 with identical design?
