Stars Stripes Kilauea

Not my frame I'm afraid to remove the cups (although my mate may be getting rid of it soon). On kitchen scales with the cups in the Caldera is 2082g. For comparison, a larger 19" 853 Hot (with a really thick powder coat) is 2004g. Also, both the Hot and a '98 Explosif (also 853) have similar 35.2mm down tubes.

I just did some research and can't find any info on 631 main tubes being any wider than 31.8mm, that's the oversized tube measurement.

Could it be that your Kilauea has a different down tube? 853 perhaps?

Ha ha, that would be a nice surprise. Tempting to strip that frame down and try and find out! I suppose with Kona's anything is possible.

Here are all the parts for the Chris King headset, the seller believes the top race isn't CK.

I'm not a Chris king expert, can anyone tell me if this seems legit? And apart from a top cap, what would I need to get to complete it?

I not to sure with out getting mine out but I sure them silver rings are the bit that goes on top of the forks is it flat with a lip then the big o rings 1 goes in each then there should be a sealed bearing in each cup and them blue bits don't look right so I would say it's right but I new to this so someone with more knowledge or I get mine out tomorrow and take a look for you

The two bearing cups look ok. You can pick the snap rings and seals out and clean and regrease. The crown race looks ok too although the ones I've had aren't split. The bearing cap doesn't look like a CK.

I'll add my 2p worth - thanks @kingoffootball for alerting me to the thread.
The frame number (H8C38154) deciphers It's a Hodaka built frame, dated 1998. The 'C' indicated a March built frame. I will put up a post to describe the Hodaka numbers in more detail when I get around to it.

There's another Kilaua with a similar frame number in this thread - it's also a 1998 despite the title.

Thank you to everyone who helped figure out what this bike is and when it was made, plus all the other useful info. Much appreciated 👍

I've already started gathering parts and have a plan for where this build is going. there are a couple of projects ahead in the queue, but as soon as my focus switches to this I'll get a build thread up, my first in the 98 --> section.

here's a very rough sketch depicting the direction of travel, perhaps not one for the purists, but I will try to keep things as period correct as possible, especially with the drive train and braking.
