Thanks for the replies. There must be something else not right with the set up then as it appears the only thing that holds the stem in place is the star nut. Without that tight the handle bars and stem are loose. With my old forks (project 2's) and velocity stem. They seemed to just bolt directly to the thread that was inside the forks.

This sound very much like you are trying to use and bolt a threaded stem aka quill from your old threaded setup onto a ahead setup.
The starfangled but is not designed for thgst and neither is the internal diameter of the steerertube.
You need to get an ahead style stem.
Another name for ahead is 'threadless'.

might give you an overview.
Looking into it now this is the more likely explanation. The forks seem identical how they are threaded at the top to my old forks the only difference is there isnt a thread inside the new forks to bolt down onto. This is why I thought a star nut would do the job. My mistake.

A pic would still be useful here, if only to help you with some info in case you decide to head to a bike shop.

step away from the bicycle and seek a local bike shop.

Seriously suggest you follow LGF's advice...

...and the reason people are recommending you post some photo's is because NO steerer has a thread inside. :?

useful little bit of info. so the forks are threaded.
answer now is go to your old forks, get a bolt rod, whack the stuck old thread out of it. that is the wedge that belongs to the stem, it'll have an angled edge. screw that onto the bolt in the stem a little and slot into bike and tighten.

Fluffy chicken I could kiss you lol. Thanks a lot for your reply. Just knocked the wedge out and fitted it and the job is now sorted. Thanks again.
