Star nut removal?

To use a quill stem the steerer must be a threaded one and use a threaded headset. the expander wedge just grips the inside of the steerer, keeping the stem & the forks together, it does nothing to secure either to the frame!

if the steerer has a star nut fitted and is smooth on the outside its a threadless steerer. these work with ahead/threadless headsets. the two systems are not mix and match.

As to removal, easiest way is not just "twat it", as this may cause damage (especially if you miss),
1, drill the top of the threaded inset out
2, then use a hammer and punch to turn the top part of the star nut edge on
3, use a pair of pliers and pull the top part out
4, repeat step 2 for the bottom part.

How are you going to tension the headset if you put a quill stem in?

I thought that quill stems gripped the inside of the steerer tube by pushing out when they were tightened. Did I get that wrong? Or have I missed something?

Do your forks have threads? If yes then no problems because they will no doubt have bearing top cap and nut tensioning the headset, but the star nut holds the forks in place on a thread less system(with a little help from the stem too) :D

EDIT:and what Matt says above too,But I do just use an old seat post and bray it through

Okay, thanks for the explanation. Yet again it seems I have bought a collection of incompatible parts.
Next question: I have a pair of RC30s with a threadless steerer. Can I swap this for a threaded steerer?
Thanks.

I believe this is possible, others may be able to confirm?? Have a look at the steerer swap thread, that may answer your question.

You will also need a new headset if you go this route by the sound of it, a threaded one.

With butted steerer tubes I just use a strong flat-bladed screwdriver to lever the SFN tabs up so it eventually just drops out.

As for the OP, can you not just get a threadless headset and stem thus utilising the firk you have bought?

Yes definately a steerer from another set of rc30's or a set of rc35's should work nae bother. I even think some RC36 steers would work but don't quote me on that. Plus an rc36 with a threaded steerer would be a rare beasty indeed.

I have two pairs of rigid forks for my Torus, a pair of UGLI in grey and a pair of RC30.
I wanted to build it first with cantilever brakes and M900, however I don't have enough steerer on the UGLI forks to have a Canti hanger on the steerer.

Then I saw a Syncros stem with Canti noodle and thought it would solve my problem. But it's a quill stem. Hence my ill-informed question around star nut removal.

How about getting a canti stop/hanger like the 96 Konas? Bolts onto the fork? would seem a lot cheaper than changing half the front end, if you can find one that is.....

Why not use one of these...
