spokesave.co.uk any good?

I've just been looking on the bay for spokes as I'm thinking of building my own wheels and came across these guys

www.spokesave.co.uk

The wheels won't be for anything ridiculous, I just want them to stay round!

Are the spokes butted or plain-gauge? What gauge are they? What if you need 260, 266 or 268? I find it surprising they haven't thought to give any of this information.

And as for this:

"How critical is the spoke length?
Our spoke nipples are 12mm long and are threaded all the way through. The threaded part of each spoke is also 12mm. For this reason, we recommend similar lengths for each side of the rear wheel. "

Eh?

I recently bought some on ebay , packs of 10 , they were good for the price .

That's one odd site...

Would be interested what turns up if anybody uses them

I would imagine a ACI straight gauge spoke but who knows for less the 20p each

As you point out, they are a bit messed up with their 12mm/12mm logic but when building wheels I will often use same length spokes on the rear. You will often find that rear wheel spoke lengths vary by 1 or 2mm on the drive to non-drive meaning that you can often get away with building same length spokes on both sides by ensuring you dish correctly. This means that spares are a bit easier to carry/own etc as you only need 1 length rather than two, also makes buying them easier and cheaper. I tend to buy longer nipples to help me do this though rather than the 12mm ones as 16mm nipples means you can wind the spoke in 12mm on the non-drive and 14mm on the drive to compensate.

£5.99 is rather cheap for 36 spokes. They will be plain gauge spokes at this price and I hope the threads are rolled and not cut.

Really cheap spokes might have cut threads and this is bad if they.

To give you an idea of how cheap these are I normally sell Sapim race spokes for 50p each make 36 cost £18. So those are really cheap spokes probably the kind used in cheap wheels for cheap sub £150 bikes.

Also bear in mind cheap nipples distort very easily at the tensions you should be using which is why some (not all though) cheap wheel sets run lower tensions than they should.
