Splatterpaint Raleigh Outland tip find.

Thanks for the comments chaps!

She cleaned up really well with a bit of effort but I doubt that I will fork out on this frame. If a few cheap bits come my way then she may be ridden again but this isn't going to be a full project. It was more an exercise in boredom relief than anything else

seen a few nice bikes at the tip but they won't let you have them even if you offer them paper with the queens pic on them

To be quite honest I really shouldn't have taken the bike. The staff at the site get a bit shirty if you try to remove stuff even though its about to be crushed and disposed of

You're quite right dbmtb ! The original parts that I removed were cheap as chips and horrible. Lee Chi brakes/levers, steel bars and a nasty crankset. And yes it does weigh a ton

BTW I used Autoglym metal polish and bog standard Turtle Wax car shampoo to clean it up. Paint work looks like a thick powdercoat to me.

Cheers.

The parts that were fitted to the bike in the first pic are the original parts from the look of it.

Raleighs always had a reputation back then for being a bike for life. Actually made in Nottingham and painted with good quality paint (powder coat). This was near the bottom of the Raleigh range with only the Scorpion below it, I think.

Really like old Raleighs :)

Ive got some old Shimano mechs in a box in my shed, pm me if they can be of use...postage costs only

I got mine new in 1991

I got mine new in 1991 for definite from a place in west ealing - more like a department store than a bike shop from what I remember. I'm sure of the date because my wife bought it me as an engagement present. I got her a ring, she got me a 'mountain bike' - seemed a fair deal at the time. 20 years later and
both the wife and bike are still here. I keep on of them in the garage and one has aged better than the other

Black permanent marker and blue nail polish should sort the paint job out. You won't be the first to take a frame into a supermarket to match nail polish with a frame colour.

Nice one Major! I do love a tip rescue. Here in Devon the "recycling centres" are dead keen to sell you stuff for next to nothing. My Topanga frame was a fiver and last w/e I got a nice pair of promax wheels for £4.
Lovely job on that paintwork, and I like the look of the bike just as you have it coming along. I wouldnt worry too much about period correctness there - just get it riding nicely. Regards to Jersey 8)

I love old Raleighs especially there mad paintschemes and daft slogans. Energiser stays, HA !!! you'll use loads of energy shifting that much steel around, De-energiser stays more like. Powerblade forks, enough power to cut through solid rock. The great colourschemes I believe were the biggest selling point

there is one of these sat in my dads garage (or at least there used to be!)

i think he got his from argos BITD, summer '94 at a guess but maybe a bit earlier.

i think i'm gonna have to go and have a rummage and see if its there along with any last remnants of my old bits.

Wow

Kind of you all to bump this thread up. Thanks for the comments fellas !
But sadly the frame has now departed due to the fact that my garage is now so full of bits the wife (got to blame someone!) questioned my sanity.

It seemed like a good idea at the time but to be honest I just haven't the time or inclination to give the old Raleigh a proper build, no matter how cheap and cheerful :( As stated in the thread this was only a way of easing the boredom a bit so never that serious. Sorry to disappoint chaps !

You're right about the weight. But surprisingly, once stripped, it wasn't that bad. Still a tank though ! Sad to see it go and if nothing else it was an antidote to the higher end pushbikes and plush builds out there 8)

Really breaks my old heart to see the amount of old bikes gracing the local dump on occasions. It's symptomatic of a wealthy society that a fully functioning piece of machinery can be discarded without a second thought. Just a splash of tlc and that bike could do somebody nicely few a few more years. But it wont be me !

So, RIP Raleigh and onwards and upwards :D

Raleigh Outland - I've got one, had it from new!

Hello! This is my first post - I joined to respond to this thread i found on my old bike!

I just found this site while web-searching about my old (first) MTB (though not sure if an Outland really qualifies?).

I think I bought it for £165 way back in about 1988 or thereabouts (21" Frame, 18-speed). I've had it ever since and it's still totally original apart from the brake blocks and the tyres (and a bit of wear and tear and a bit of rust). It came with those (actually pretty comfy) cowhorn 'bars, alloy rims, and the brakes were always awful - you need a grip like Dolph Lungrens w***ing hand to get it to slow down even a bit.

I hit a pothole on a trail a few months ago - snapped a spoke and dinged the back wheel (I've ridden this old thing around Brechfa MTB runs not too long back, and it surprised quite a few how quick it was down the single-track downhills. TBH I think our combined weight, gravity and truly abysmal brakes had a lot to do with that though  ).

I'm now wondering what to do with it (have bought a 2012 Giant Talon Zero 29er to replace it) - I realise that its not exactly desireable old kit, but was still feeling a bit bad about taking it to the tip!

Any ideas anyone? Is the old girl worth saving / keeping?
