The free hub isn’t working right on my spin wheels

If your turn it forwards like you are pedalling and then try to turn it backwards to simulate freewheeling it has a resistance , clicks once and then turns normally. It still works but creates a moment of chainsuck when riding.

Any ideas ?

Re:

Are they conventional internally? If so Pawls sticking maybe, not releasing the freewheel when it should. Have you had the freehub apart recently?

Re:

I’ve never stripped it. To be honest it’s probably not done 100 miles

Any idea how to strip it ?

It's been a long time since I took mine apart (Don't have the wheel anymore so can't check sorry) but I seem to remember the axle screws together a bit like the hope bulb front qr axle did. look in the ends to see if you can fit an Allen key in each end.

Re:

So I’ve taken the rear hub apart now and only issue I can see is one set of pawls seem to have a lot of movement when depressed.

I’ve attached some pics of me pressing down one set that’s normal and then a 2 pics of the not normal one. They depress but move forward slightly. Not sure if this is the issue ?

I'd get a tin of degreaser in an aerosol preferably with a straw, blast out each pawl until all the shit is out & the liquid is running clear.
Then blast some GT85 through & let drain, clean it up & then pack each pawl with marine grease (other greases are available) then reassemble & give it a try, my as well fit new bearings while you at it!

Re:

As mentioned a good potential problem is the free hub pawls.

But check your jockey wheels in the mech - if sticky they can cause problems as you describe, and can cause misdiagnosis of the issue. Also check the B screw has enough tension. And it can be all three: jockey wheels, B tension and pawls.

If definitely free hub, a roaming bit of grit in the pawls or the grease being the wrong consistency or the pawls being dry (which looks as thought they are) or all three. Nothing serious - happens all the time. Good advice in the previous posts.

Silicon is your friend on the hub seals - not standard great. Light mineral or synthetic grease is your friend on the pawls and the inside of the hub. As mentioned flush out the pawls very well with GT85, then dry. Install very light grease. Wipe all seals with a very very thin smear of silicon grease - stops water ingress. Excess grease around the axles and seals does tend to draw crap past the seals - I doubted this until I experimented. Rotation causes grease to circulate around the seals, and weird turbulence (the area of physics which is as mysterious as black holes) causes ingress I think. That's why a light hydrophobic coating of silicon grease seems to work really well.

Hope has an excellent video on the servicing of their hubs which helps general hub servicing.,.

Thanks for advice guys. 100% a free hub issue as it happens when when is off the bike. If you push the freehub in to the wheel it’s works ok but once axle tightened a little it doesn’t work properly.
