How did the times on the day compare with Gary's record...??
Mr K
Most of us are convinced the record is safe. Even on modern equipment no one has touched it.
It takes a lot of practice on the hill to maximize the speed, but one rider last week claimed (it was self-timed) 5:04 which is impressive for his first shot at it and consistent with winning times when the race first started. He was some expert Euro downhiller, but I don't know his name.
Marla Streb and Joe Lawwill rode in the 4:40 range a few years back, and with practice might knock something off that. Even though we were riding ridiculous equipment BITD, we practiced all the time on our hill, and with the top three times within three seconds of each other, the timing seems to have been accurate and the riding very consistent.
Course conditions are slow right now because when the road surface dries out in the summer it gets slippery. Best time to ride is in the fall after a few rains have made the surface tacky.
I went up there a couple of days ago with Tym Manley from MBUK and shredded with Joe Breeze, the two of us riding together and cutting each other off in the turns. I was doing pretty good and staying even with him, but I had some difficulties near the bottom, and finished fifty feet behind him with no rear brake and a flat rear tire.
