Specialized Stumpjumper 1984

Retro Newbie
I've been meaning to share this with you guys for ages now to see what you think? This bike belongs to my dad and has been sat in his bike room for over 20 years still in beautiful condition, no longer have the original stumpjumper tyres unfortunately but he has an Blackburn aluminium rack for the back of it. I rode it a couple of years ago and it brought a huge smile to my face, still rides beautifully all the gears are smooth. Has anyone got any idea what these are worth nowadays?

Re: Specialized Stumpjumper 1982

Looks pretty cool, has it got a serial number on it anywhere?

Re:

The best thing about it is it's got the 23" frame, so it'd make a decent bike for /adults/ to ride, instead of the plethora of too-small 19" frames that were sold in the day (and now).

These are of course notoriously hard to 'pin down', but this one looks to have either some post-original parts (rims for sure, front mech, stem, crank, shifters, looks like brakes, etc.) and some real '1982' parts (Tomaselli levers., is that an AR rear mech?, the seat (maybe, if its got or had the 'stumpjumper' name on the nose).

I might guess it's maybe a ~84 based on the cranks and brakes (what I can see) but it's got the Tomasellis...

As far as worth, you shouldn't even consider that, but keep and ride it (after, of course, successfully swindling it away from your dad)!

Valuable indicators/boosters, at least in the US, would include the large frame in good shape, the Tomaselli levers, and if it had it, the Mafac cantis, golf club stem, wheels with Araya 7x's if in good shape, and Stumpjumper logo seat. Might be worth replacing some of the non-original parts with NOS if possible (esp. mechs).

As you probably have found or already know,
http://mombat.org/MOMBAT/bike_list.html
is the best place to compare model year specs/contradictions; the largely abandoned old group:
https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/fir ... s/messages
is also useful sometimes.

Those fenders/mudguards look real cool though - are they aluminum? Any idea what brand? I'm trying to figure out how to put some stainless GB fenders on one of my 1982s now (a lugged one, also 23" frame); a bit tricky since neither the fork crown, CS bridge, not SS bridges are drilled - AND there's this huge S-curve in the chainstays right between the bridge and about where the tyre is...

Maybe it's just me, but does the fork look a little bent-back from a front-end hit?

(who has an 82 tigged, an 82 lugged, an 84, and had an 85 sport /best of all in my opinion/ until the fool I bought it from made me sell it back!)

Re:

Wow cheers for all that information Robert, I'm not as knowledgeable as my dad I'm more into modern bikes but my dad isn't the best with technology etc so I thought it would be a shame nor to share it! I live up in Aberdeenshire and my parents are in Yorkshire but I'm going to visit them this weekend so I'll get the bike out and photograph the rear mech, mud guards, frame number etc for you. My dad wouldn't consider selling it but it would be interesting to see what it's worth, I'm pretty sure he'll get buried with it to prevent me getting my grubby mitts on it! Regards Jamie
