Specialized S-Works mid- nineties??

Hey guys,

I haven’t posted on here for a while but I figured you would be the best ones to help me with this query.
My parents were moving house today and my stepdad dug out his old road bike. I asked what he planned to do with it, he want sure. I said he should consider selling it on as it’s getting on for vintage and there’s probably a market for high end old road bikes.
What do you guys think?

Here’s what I know- he bought it second hand off the owner of Cycling World in Aberdeen in about 1998. It must be a couple of years older than that. The forks may not be what was specced originally.

He hasn’t ridden it for a while, 20 years maybe, and it hasn’t been ridden much at all tbh.

Any idea on what year it is and what it might be worth?

Thanks for looking and if you’ve got any info, please let me know!

Looks like the 1995 S-works M2 Road frameset built up with late gen Dura Ace 7400. I don't think they were sold in this configuration so its likely the original owner built it up themselves. The M2 is in reference to the Alu the frame is made out of and not the actual model name, as far as I know the model was just the S-works road.

Re:

Thanks for your reply.
Yeah you’re right, it’s been built up from parts. The groupset seems to be older than the frame.

Dura Ace 7400 8spd with STI shifters was available until 1996 so the frame and groupset match. 7700 with 9spd came out in '97.

I don't recognize the fork so not sure where that came from.

Re:

Oh right, I assumed the Dura Ace was older as the mech has a more vintage design.
Do you think it would have come stock with suspension forks? I saw a version of this bike in a catalogue yesterday and it had a pair of Rock Shox on! Looking at the bike again the bars do seem a little low so it could be that the angles have all changed due to the fork swap.

Re:

It might have had Rockshox originally, maybe they were replaced with the rigid fork at some point due to problems?
Components look of the same period, probably Dura Ace 7410, 7403 etc the last revisions of the 74XX group before 9-speed came in.
You sure you dont want to keep it? I've a 2000 S-Works M4 road bike and I really like how it rides.
I think Cycling World must have gone before I moved to Aberdeen, but I had a bike the other year with the shop sticker still on it.
Not sure on value, its old, but maybe not quite old enough to be worth a lot, and the missing fork is disappointing. The components are always in demand though.

My understanding is that the Super Road was a full build you could buy but the frame itself was also available on its own. I've never actually seen one of the Super Road builds outside this catalog, all the images I've seen of these frames are just of the frame itself or frame up builds with rigid forks.

Re:

@jimo - it’s not my bike but I wouldn’t keep it if it was.
I borrowed it for a day about 10 years ago and I think it put me off road biking! I couldn’t get used to the bent over riding position and twitchy steering. It might just be that I’m too used to mountain bikes though.
