Specialized hardrock build advice

Hi,

I'm in the process of rebuilding a 1989 Hardrock comp. The parts have cleaned up nicely, just after a bit of advice regarding the BB and wheels.

It has a cup and cone BB that I've removed, cleaned, greased and reinstalled but it feels a bit notchy. Thinking of changing for a cartridge BB. Is this a simple as measuring the axle and housing length and find the correct fit?

Also the spokes are rusty, rims seem fine, from the images would you say they are worth cleaning up.

Cheers

Wayne.

On the BB yes, you are on th eright lines - shell and shaft length are the key dimensions.

As for the spokes, personally I would re-lace with new stainless double-butted spokes, but I build my own wheels so it's a cheap option. For around £50 you can get a decent set of used wheels, which iwll be around the same as getting a shop to build them I suspect. It depends on how much you want to spend.

Cheers

Think I'll measure up for a sealed BB.

Not much, not sure what I'm going to do with it. Think I'll keep an eye out for a used set of wheels or donor bike.

Those would work yes.

However personally I would look for a period upgrade set.

That colour scheme on the Hardrock is awesome, so typical of the late 80's.

I know what your're saying.

Ideally I'd like the original araya mp-22. Might put the Weinmann TM19s on so I can ride it and keep an eye out for the araya.

Not sure how much the wheels are, they may cost more than the bikes' worth.

Re:

If I were you, I'd check the measurement of the dropouts before buying new wheels: Are they 130mm or 135mm apart? If the dropouts are 130mm and you get a rear wheel for 135mm dropouts, you'll be burdening yourself with another job. My '94 Hardrock has 135mm dropouts but my '91 Ridgeback has 130mm. It's worth checking.

Re:

The BB will have a code on the axle, it's then easy to find a replacement.
But yes cartridge will be fine.

Cost more than the bike though ;-)

Checked and the dropouts are 130mm.

Thanks for that, seems the bike is mostly original spec. Think I have a bit of wriggle room for parts. The bike only cost me £5.
