Something is wrong: Cheap old Cantilever is better than modern cheap V brakes? Top Line 93-94

Yup, old stuf was made better. Many people know the XT 737 96-97 gropu set and are fantastic, smooth, the clic is nice, v brakes with power etc . But what amaze me is this cheap bike to go to the beach. Here is stock, only have been changed the grips. Later I have discovered a broken rear axis and a bad chain, so from cheap to ... Ok.

Back in the days this bicycle was not that cheap and now I know why. Every thing works quite fine. I have add the fork. it is a gila T5 bought in a shop, the guy of the shop revised and greased it and works amazing smooth, not a bargain but it is worth the work he had done as it is a old early 2000´s model. This is why real shops are worth: the service is fantastic. So as I cannot assemble the cantilever, first day was without front brake.

The stock brakes are altus C90 but if you add the fork you have to add an adaptor and I don´t have one. I will order it but I have to wait so I went to aliexpress and bought the front V bakes and a pair of brake levers for 7 euros all. Yes that dirt cheap. The result: The cantilever is precise, and have more power than the V brakes that have lot of play. I took my time to dial everything but it is what it is, cheap plastic and alu alloy and bad adjustment. But it works. Yes nothing to do with 96 XT v-brakes or Avid SD 7 etc etc but going cheap ... the C90 cantilever is better option than this aliexpress one.

As I´m not at home, I cannot cut the cable 😅

I really like this one. Now is not that cheap and I don´t want to add more money, it is supose to be a dirt cheap bicycle to go to the beach and forget in the parking with a cheap lock. But now I really like it. I have even add some modern details to match the colors. Ready for the next decade 😄

I run wide arm (xt m732 etc) cantilevers over v brakes, due to the lack of modulation on even expensive v brakes.

These days, with great blocks available, im not sure there is much in it stopping wise....(if it locks the wheel and breaks traction, its as much as you're getting anyway you skin it).

For me control and feel of cantilevers will always win out.

Obviously, you have to set up cantilevers correctly and have a bit of understanding, where as you just bolt on a vbrake and ride away!

So with that fact in mind, i can see why its simple for many to belive Vs are far far superior.

I keep my cantilever because v brake arms are always too short for wide tires+mudguards. Not enough clearance. Braking power is irrelevant...

The time is fast approaching, where neighbours will ask if I can check over a new bike, before it's hidden away for Xmas.
Oh lordy, some of those cheap disc brakes are frightening.
