whats it like in Denmark for mountain biking? only asking as atm i'm working over their every other week, i fly into Billund and stay in Esjberg, and so far i have not seen 1 hill, its all completely flat!

Billund isn't too far from some really good woodland - we often drive past Egtved on the way to Legoland or the airport and at some point I'll get round to taking a bike with me.

Otherwise Vejle / Silkeborg are very good.

I've found some really great rides on Fyn now I've been here for a couple of years. Sorry Paul but Copenhagen area is rubbish in comparison - lived there for 12 years - and last couple of years I lived there did all my off-roading on a cyclocross bike.

Epic rides always involve a few transitionary miles on tarmac unfortunately but I'm riding my MTB a lot more than I've ever done before in Denmark.

Couple of things I really have a hard time with in Denmark though. It's always train train train.... And Lycra lycra lycra....

Cafe, cake shop and baggy shorts type riding just doesn't exist in this country and it's doing my head in.

You've got it right with the training and lycra and plastic bikes (much like the Dutch scene mentioned above), but then they cry like babies at the olympics because the course was too technical. Kind of says a lot about those types of riders. Basically they're just rodies on mountain bikes. So, even if the riding is rubbish by comparison (haven't tried the other side of the sound), at least me and my friends have a good time, wear baggies, repeat fun sections and love to eat cake after a ride. That should more than make up for the terrain if you decide to visit here and want to scoot out for a ride :D

I'm guessing you were riding the "red" trail in Hareskov and the "blue" in Rude Skov when you were here? They've had some trail days to fix them up so they may be a little better than you remember.

I just miss the epic Peak district rides where the cake shop and pub was PART of the ride....

Take for example the Cat and Fiddle ride near Macclesfield. You'd start at the (real ale) pub. Ride across the moors to a little farm with a cake shop. And ride back round to the (real ale) pub..

It doesn't get any better than that.

We have a lot of this here in Holland as well the "hard rechtdoor" kind of riders.

Was in your country last week and took my cyclo cross bike with me. Managed to get a little bit of riding in and there was some good single track but not very much climbing. Vey enjoyable on the right bike though.

But your motorway queues man?

I don't do queus, I ride my bike or the train  It does get really silly, basically I do not go anywhere in high traffic hours. Takes some planning but I take a cup of coffee and something to read (work or bike related) on the train any day. I live 5 cycling miles from work, my commuter is the 80's Alan Carbonio CX :D

Enjoy!!

PS: "not very much climbing" nominated as understatement of the year.
I have stated it here before, most of Holland IS flat.

Haha, I think Holland makes Denmark look like a mountainous region

It would seem we could almost have Retro Denmark ride.

I concur with the training observation. I went out for a ride with the local club and it was all carbon fibre and shaved legs. They did go down lots of secret singletrack and were really friendly, so I will try and go back when my fitness improves and I can keep up.
