So when does a Bike become a Retro Classic ?

So what does that make my Pace then?? (Loaded question just to stimulate the argument/chat - delete as applicable)

Not vintage; Not retro according to some of the good people of this site because it is post '97; it has discs so is definitely out on the brake situation. However for some people it is (and was) the pinnacle of bike design and desire. Including me.

But is it a classic?

To keep things going
I wouldn't, it's just a modification of the original one, which is a classic. Other than that it's just a PACE bike, nothing different or revolutionary about it, same old same old....
A nice reproduction of the classic style perhaps.

;)

Dissapointing to see how few 'bites' we've had on this thread

Well ?

and "WHO" decides ?

Just been wondering if my Beloved 'WHYTE PRST1 works' is now a Retro Classic ?

Only "YOU" can decide.

my frames are classic and very retro. Shame about most of the parts on them

Classic only applies to highend MTB's that are rare, epitomize a style, are vintage or retro, but again, top of the food chain stuff, hand built in small numbers by a true craftsman or artisan.

I don't think anyone (sane) would argue the classic status of the Model T, Colt 45 or AK47, Glock (sorry - I'm not a gun nut, but I used to work in the videogame industry...), Parker 51, Gillette Fatboy, "Speed" model of G-Shock, etc. And these were NOT rare or especially high-end or made by hand. They're classics because they worked extremely well and defined a particular stage in technology. In mountain biking the obvious examples are early Stumpjumpers, as the first mass production bikes, and Joe Murray's designs for Kona, the first production bikes to have radically sloping top tubes. So qualities for classic status are

- Effective
- Passed on DNA to later designs
- Innovative
- Iconic

Well, it seems that i've opened a can of worms ..... again :?

I consider my / The Whyte PRST1 top be a retro classic, as it was sooo out of this world 7 amazing to look at & Ride when it was launched, not to mention its HIGH end price tag. It sort of defines a period in Bicycle design, when everyone was trying new ways to make a Full Susser a Viable Cross country machine, without having all of the attributes of a Pogo-Stick ! :D

I LOVE IT, AND ITS OLD (ish) NO LONGER MADE, AND look Mental... To me its Retro !

:D
