Have a look at gravel tyres.
I’m running 42c which is roughly 1.5” and very similar performance wise to my old Spesh Hardpacks 1.5’s.
Most brands doing a 47x700c which would fit a 29er rim.
Back to the original question. In the days before suspension, I liked a fatter front tyre. Could run it a bit softer without pinch flatting and more braking grip . Rear tyre a bit narrower and firmer which always felt a bit faster. Also helped with mud clearance.
On fat bike I also ran a 4.8 front and 3.8 rear.
If you’ve switched to same size front and back then if will feel different as the balance will have changed even just slightly. You’ll soon get used to it. May have to tweak the saddle angle slightly as the rear of the bike will be a touch higher pushing your weight forward. We’re not talking much but if it’s the only bike you ride, you may well notice it. I swap between 4-5 bikes all the time, so I tend not to notice small changes too much as each bike is very different.
