Thinking of one of these for economical long distance hauling ass and gear across country.

Anyone any experience or opinions on them :?:

My Subaru is good, especially at the moment with all the snow & ice, but ain't half thirsty.

Re: Skoda Octavia Estste

Mine blew up (petrol engine).
I replaced it with a Subaru Imprezza Estate.
That blew a head gasket.

Cars hate me.

Re: Skoda Octavia Estste

Most are taxis which says something.

Keep up with regular oil changes and make sure the cambelt has been done properly inc water pump.

Not exactly VW build quality as materials are different, wiring is of lower quality than the equivalent Audi/ VW along with plastics. But still better than many.

Re:

I'm up to about 38,000 in mine, in just over a year. It's the newest shape / model which is very slightly bigger than its predecessor.

I like mine a lot, it taps along at a fair lick but I can easily get 57 to 60 MPG on mixed road driving, and better if I'm careful (slow).

My longest drive to date was eight hours up to / back from the West Highlands and it was great, no sore legs, back, neck, ankles, just an all day drive each end of a weeks holiday.

I'd happily have another.

Oh, but the built in Sat Nav is rubbish as it does not accept post codes only addresses, and as I visit new build sites on a daily basis, almost none of which had addresses, it is not much cop for me. On the other hand, when going up and down the M6 to the office or back home, it does detect traffic jams and offer diverts. I still have my Garmin though.

Re: Skoda Octavia Estste

Got a VRs estateand at 180bhp it's reasonably quick, gets into the high 40's on motorway runs and has enough poke to go through tyres in about 10K miles if you don't have to pay for then ( I don't)

Built quality is reasonable and oil consumption is not bad either, very basic in terms of spec, most things are extra but at 22K new I wasn't expecting much

Re:

I've had a 1.8TSI L&K for 4.5 years from new, and am generally happy with it. No problems, the odd wear and tear thing.

Its perfectly functional transport, but not very sexy.

Not sure i'd go for another to be honest.

Re: Skoda Octavia Estste

just to add, massive boot for size of the car, the engine is sweet and the Xenon lights are ace

Re:

I don't do sexy cars

Economy and reliability are priorities as I do fairly high rural mileages in all weathers, often in darkness :xmas-big-grin: :xmas-big-grin:

No real negatives with the Skoda option then??

Re:

I spend equal amounts of time in rural areas as I do on the motorway, as I visit builders and building sites, my car constantly has a liberal coating of mud on it at this time of year.

If you get a brand new one, they do use a bit of oil for the first 25 to 30k, about a litre between services. A colleague with an Audi A3 had exactly the same thing. Apparently it is due to the synthetic oils used (VAG use a specific multigrade), which means the engines take longer to bed in.

Apart from that, and the so so Sat Nav, no complaints.

Plus, if you get a standard estate, it's possible to fit a bar across the width of the boot which you can clamp bikes to. The VW rack is over £100, but I figured out how to make one for about £35. Trouble is mine is the Elegance model with the underfloor additional boot space, so the floor height is too high. Nice idea though.
