bb removal success

finally got the adjustable cup out - well 2 of us did - angle grinder to cut 2 slots, bolster chisel hammered into them, stilson wrench to turn the chisel with heat gun playing on the bb shell. Bent the first chisel, used bigger one!
Surprising amount of clean grease in the bearing face & surprising the the fixed cup was comparitively easy.
So, now I need a replacement adjustable cup. Anyone got one?

I have just picked up an old bike covered in paint, I'll see tomorrow if it will come off, dont hold your breath though!

Went to take the bike into the LBS to get the cups out but couldnt do it for a few weeks! So will try this week myself, although I have no tool to try it.

Stuck BB cup

I had an adjustable BB cup stuck in my Clockwork (strange it's usually that one that gets seized).

I took the frame to my LBS who had it for a couple of weeks trying various ways of getting it out but even they couldn't shift it so I took it to a local precision engineering firm thinking that they could drill it out somehow. In the end they just TIG welded a big bar to the cup and levered it out. The guy didn't even want anything for doing it and I virtually had to force £10 on him!

My dad has a welder, think that might be the best option. Not sure how stuck it is as havent got a spanner big enough for the easy side, but either way, thats a great plan. I will do this for sure. Cheaper then buying a tool for starters.

I was considering spending £40 on tools to remove the BB and I'm glad I didn't. My LBS broke their pin spanner trying to remove the adjustable cup.

I should add that the TIG welding didn't damage the paint either. I've fitted a UN53 cartridge BB as a replacement.

Well after a week soaking in penetrating oil, and with no specific tool, I managed to put the "flat" end of the cup and cone bottom bracket in a vice and turned the frame to get it out. Simple.

The drive side which requires a pin spanner was more difficult. I took the locknut off no problem, and with the exposed area of the bottom bracket, managed to grip it in the vice and undid it that way.

Simples.
