Skip Find! Saracen Sahara

I've been trying to get a bb like that out of my Saracen Ltd Edition (1990 I think) for weeks. Fixed cup was easy but non drive side has withstood gallons of penetrting oil + hammer & drift. Today I might try to borrow a neighbour's heat gun. Will probably blister the paint but a bit of black enamel will sort that.

Right, so do I need any special tools for these bottom brackets? Was dark by the time my cranks came off so didnt have a go with anything.

I used a thin 36 mm headset spanner on the fixed cup but if it's tight needs to be held in place by a big washer, a spacer & a crank bolt otherwise it will slip. Spray it with lube every time you walk past.
You can use an adjustable peg spanner on the non drive side once its loose but I bent mine as the cup is seized so I'm bashing at it with a heavy hammer & pointy thing in one of the holes. (& it still ain't moving.)
Once it comes out I'll probably clean it up, fit new bearings, loads of grease & re-use as I don't have any spare 122 axle cartridge bb's. The bike is only for my son to stick a baby seat on although I hope he'll remove it sometimes & come on our rides!
Good luck with yours.

Halfords do a mechanics tool for cars which is 32mm one and 36 the other. At £12.99 its pretty good, much bigger than a normal headset spanner and the 36mm will do your bottom brackets (reverse thread remember).

And the 32mm will do headsets. Quite a good tool, big and strong, which you will need!

Its called the "Laser Fan Spanner 32/36mm"

If you can get that side off then remove the spindle apply wd40 or similar for a year or so and then big hammer and cold chisel or big screwdriver in the holes on the other side and hit it a lot!!

Bike shop might still be the easiest option.

Ignore my advice about that spanner from halfords. Its ok for headsets but not deep enough for bottom brackets really!

How are you getting on?

I have one skinwall tyre (possibly tioga) that is in about the same condition as the one you already have, plus a little bit of paint on it!! Its spare if you want it.

Hi mate,

No real progress, went to the shed last night to measure the spanner sizes as I need headset spanners and to try and get the bottom bracket out (as discussed!).

I will probably pick up the tools from a mate or buy and then have a go before giving up and dropping it in to the LBS!

well, I'm having no luck getting the adjustable cup out of the Ltd Edn. Tried a heat gun, Stilson wrench, cold chisel & big hammer, electric hacksaw belonging to a neighbour. Blade was too big to get inside the cup & cut through to the bb shell but a smaller blade might do it if I can find one.

Found today at the skip/recycling centre.

I know there are some on here who say that's where it belongs, but worth me paying £4 to the chairity box on site for the farmer johns nephew tyre alone.

Diddy little 16" bike. Going to salvage what I can and buid it for the wife I think.

Yes, it really is heavy. And amazingly, the seatpost isnt siezed!

Excellent, defo '91 then but a Sahara, which is weird because I recently fettled a '91 Tufftrax in the same livery that spends it's life tied to the guard rails on a yacht.

I ditched the old 200GS stuff and fitted Altus A10, aside from that boat anchor of a chainset, it weighed twice what my Altus with ally rings did, it was scary, but perhaps the only saving grace was it was biopace, which I was quite impressed with, the motion I like.

Oh and given that vintage, beware the bottom bracket, the one I fettled involved some serious surgery to remove.

Anyway ;

But with some of the steel removed, I was impressed, the bike was pretty light and handled well.
