Whats your views on singlespeeds? Lots of them on the forum and steadily growing. Waste of a good bike? They're cool? Bloody luddites(ironic on a retro forum mind)? Too many of them?

I remember posting on this forum a few months ago, "what's this singlespeed lark all about then? I just don't get it."

Now most of my bikes are singlespeed. I'm at a tipping point where I may only have one geared bike. And lots of one-geared bikes. Ha ha. I'll get my coat...

Built up my Talera as a SS ages ago and although i dont use it for long rides it is brill for just bobbing about on for an hour, I actually ride this more than any of the other bikes i have 8)

Used to have an On One Ti Inbred SS and found it great fun. Even more so when my mates gears kept going wrong in the mud!

Unfortunately, due to financial reasons, I had to sell it but I've now got a Giant Bowery SS road bike. 8)

Good - of course! :D My main ride is the ss, very rarely use the geared. Nice minimalistic look about them, totally uncluttered by gears, levers, mech's and extra cables. Also a good reason to own another bike! :D

It will increase your hill climbing fitness too. Get some strength into those legs!
:)

Excellent Fun but an aquired taste which I have aquired !

Do not dismiss them untill you've tried one out as only actual experience will be the decider.

Just got back from the Single Speed UK Championships at Drumlanrig where if I feature on the results board at all, it will be near the bottom. I did get the prize for Shonkiest bike on the circuit though with my converted 1970's 10 speed racer shod with cross tyres.

Seriously stupid fun !!!!!!

I like them but my knees don't like me liking them. Going back to a 1x9 set-up at the moment to see if the knees like me any more. It'll be back to gears and their problems, which is why I'm trying to get an XTR set-up. Hopefully it'll work. I do have another frame, wheels, etc waiting in the spares corner though, which may be built as a back up SS

As a kinda aside, I remember a cycling plus article about converting an mtb to a cyclocross and they fitted a 5 speed cassette(it was a while ago, I think we were around 8 speed at the time). Reason being the parts were cheap and the spacing gave less problems in the mud. A 1X7 on the same basis might be a nice retro rig, mud clearing, cheap parts and a bit avant garde. There have been a couple of lovely screw on hubs lately, a ringle set springs to mind.

I've got mine for winter night rides or just local rides, anything that isn't going to be a long ride. It makes for an ideal workout on shorter rides. The big plus for the winter is lack of things to clean/be precious about. Just leave it til next time before cleaning it
